چکیده

Gravitational microlensing provides a new technique for studying the surfaces of distant stars. Microlensing events are detected in real time and can be followed up with precision photometry and spectroscopy. This method is particularly adequate for studying red giants in the Galactic Bulge. We show that different properties of the stellar surface can be recovered from timedependent photometry and spectroscopy of a point-mass microlensing event with a small impact parameter. An emphasis is placed on center-to-limb variation of spectral features, which reveals the depth structure of the atmosphere of the source star. A model of the MACHO Alert 95-30 event source is used to illustrate the technique and the implications for constructing model atmospheres of red giants. Surface Imaging by Microlensing

Gravitational microlensing is a new technique for studying the surfaces of distant stars. A point mass lens, usually a low-mass star from the disk, will typically resolve the surface of a red giant in the Galactic bulge, as well as amplify its brightness by a factor of 10 or more. Such events are now detected in real time and can be followed up with precision photometry and spectroscopy. The mo...

Probing the Atmospheres of Planets Orbiting Microlensed Stars via Polarization Variability

We present a new method to identify and probe planetary companions of stars in the Galactic Bulge and Magellanic Clouds using gravitational microlensing. While spectroscopic studies of these planets is well beyond current observational techniques, monitoring polarization fluctuations during high magnification events induced by binary microlensing events will probe the composition of the planeta...

Measuring Stellar Limb Darkening by Gravitational Microlensing

Observations of microlensing transit events can be used to measure the limb darkening of the lensed star. We discuss the advantages and drawbacks of several microlensing light curve inversion methods. The method of choice in this work is inversion by means of decomposition of the stellar surface brightness profile. We construct an ideal basis by principal component analysis of brightness profil...

Gravitational microlensing as a test of stellar model atmospheres

We present calculations illustrating the potential of gravitational microlensing to discriminate between classical models of stellar surface brightness profiles and the recently computed “Next Generation” models of Hauschildt et al. These spherically-symmetric models include a much improved treatment of molecular lines in the outer atmospheres of cool giants – stars which are very typical sourc...

Introduction to Gravitational Microlensing

The basic concepts of gravitational microlensing are introduced. We start with the lens equation, and then derive the image positions and magnifications. The statistical quantities of optical depth and event rate are then described. We finish with a summary and a list of challenges and open questions. A problem set is given for students to practice. Gravitational microlensing (in the local grou...
